eBooks
WHAT IS AN eBOOK?
An eBook (short for 'electronic book') is the digital media equivalent of a conventional printed book, delivered to you electronically via the Internet. Our eBooks are created in Adobe PDF (Portable Document Format), the most popular and widely-used format which can be read on any PC with Adobe Acrobat and on most eBook readers. Note, however, that our eBooks are not compatible with the MAC operating system, therefore if you have a MAC computer without Windows, you will be unable to read our eBooks.
WHY eBOOKS?
eBooks have been around for a number of years, although they are now becoming much more widely available and popular due, in large part, to the increasing number of eBook readers on the market; many publishers and industry experts believe they are the future of publishing. They allow you to download a book instantly without incurring postage or packing costs (or waiting for a book to arrive), and eBooks are usually cheaper then printed books due to lower production costs. You can navigate, search and bookmark an eBook in a way that's impossible with a printed book, and increase the size of the type, which is a huge advantage for those with poor eyesight. If you have an eBook reader or portable computer, you can take literally hundreds of eBooks with you on holiday or a business trip - something that is unthinkable with conventional printed books.
HOW LONG DOES AN eBOOK TAKE TO DOWNLOAD?
That depends on the size of the book. Our eBooks typically contain at least twice as much information as similar books and many are in colour. They typically vary in size from 5 to 25MB, meaning a broadband internet connection is highly advisable - if not essential - to download an eBook, which takes just a few minutes.
HOW DO I READ YOUR eBOOKS?
With the Adobe Acrobat Reader (a free download - see below), which allows you to read any of our eBooks online. This widely-used, free program allows you to view an eBook in full color (if applicable) with the high quality you expect from a printed book. Text can be searched automatically, and cross-referenced using hyperlinks, which makes eBooks an excellent choice of format for our reference guides. A navigation bar shows you where you are in the book and you simply use your mouse to select any page you wish. In our eBooks, page links (e.g. in the list of contents and cross references) are hyperlinks, as are the website links (URLs). Readers who have difficulty reading printed books can adjust the text size and text-to-speech software can be used to automatically convert an eBook into an audio book.
For security reasons, you must be connected to the internet to view our eBooks.
eBOOK QUALITY
Our eBooks are the electronic versions of our printed books and are designed for easy reading, exactly like our printed books, with all the photographs (colour, if applicable), illustrations, graphics, cartoons and tables included. The only difference is that the resolution of the colour photographs has been reduced in order to reduce the size of the files and the download time.
