Reviews

"Soundly researched and clearly written - I found this book helpful on all the important 'must know' facts for someone about to move to the US. I also liked its appearance and photos, factual books are so often grey and boring." - E. Maile, Amazon

"I think this book is excellent and it's easily the most comprehensive book available about living and working in the USA. I have read most of the others and none of them cover the subject as extensively - chapters include finding a job, working conditions, accommodation(s), post office, telephone, TV, public transport, motoring, health (missing from some other books), education, insurance, finance, leisure, sport, shopping, etc. - and much more. It may not contain as much information about permits and visas - although it has 23 pages on the subject and lots of useful links - but this book is about MUCH MORE than simply obtaining a visa. An added bonus is that the seventh edition is also printed in colour and is by far the most readable book about living in America. Buy it - you won't be disappointed!" - H Jones, Amazon

I have read David Hampshire books before and that's what made me buy this Living & Working in America book above other books, and it's a real 'must have'. It covers living in America in real detail and I thank David Hampshire for (once again) coming up with the 'Bible' of all books.
I have read this from cover to cover - invaluable information, clear tables, Education, Accommodation, Insurance & Health Information, Finding a job, driving and the list goes on!! All in all, the one book to take with you.
- J. J. Goddard

After spending longer than I should reading through library guide after library guide, I admit I was a little sceptical when I came across this. First finding several articles extracted from the book online, I soon realised that my assumptions of another "boring comprehensive guide" were the total opposite.

This is definitely that kind of book you keep, even if it no longer serves a purpose to you. It is in fact, an intriguing read, bringing into perspective a great deal more relating to the process of actually building a life, instead of only providing the basics, allowing you to feel as though the book is understanding of the human nature.

Being a young student setting out to make my path in the world I found this a great comfort to read, being worried about the complications and lengthy processes involved, they were however explained to me in great depth. Aside from being a more personal read, it is also far more interesting and detailed than a number of other guides, leaving no subjects uncovered so you are spared the head-scratching.

This is a great reference for someone considering living and working in America. I currently live and work here and I think the details this book provides are the "essential facts" one would need to make the decision to move and to get settled more quickly upon arrival. Our systems can be quite complicated; there are probably many Americans who would learn something for this book! - Jessica R

When I bought this book, I was dismayed to read some of these reviews. Have I got a turkey, I wondered. So I borrowed an old edition from the library and compared it with this one, and was relieved to discover that it certainly has been properly updated. In fact, I reckon a lot of work has gone into it. And having moved to the US for a trial period, I'm finding it very helpful.....Would have given if 4 1/2 stars but couldn't work out how to do it, so I've gone for the big five. Four stars would have been, quite frankly, churlish of me. - J. Drury
