London's Hidden Secrets

Description

A unique and unusual guide to London's hidden and lesser-known sights not found in standard guidebooks. London is a city with a cornucopia of secret places, being ancient, vast and in a constant state of flux. London’s Hidden Secrets takes you off the beaten path to seek out the more unusual places that often fail to register on the radar of both visitors and residents alike, and aims to sidestep the chaos and queues of London’s tourist-clogged attractions and visit its quirkier, more mysterious side.

London’s Hidden Secrets includes 140 of the city’s loveliest buildings, secret gardens, bizarre museums, ‘lost’ graveyards, medieval pubs, cutting-edge art and design, and much more. The entries range from the enchanting canals of Little Venice to eccentric Thameside sculptures, from the stuffed remains of a philosopher to the poignant Foundling Museum, from the home of Sigmund Freud’s famous sofa to where Handel and Hendrix meet, and from the spectacular treasures of Ham House to atmospheric Kensal Green cemetery. Printed in colour with over 300 photos and 11 unique maps.

Reviews

"I thought I knew London but perhaps not. Having lived here for a dozen years I should do, but I hadn't heard of many of the places in this book let alone been there. So we're working our way through them by region. It helps that it fits in a pocket and isn't too heavy, but it's packed with info and interesting anecdotes. We highly recommend it." - Helstar (Amazon)

"This book was recommended to me last week by a lady in an english heritage museum shop. Well worth buying both if you are a tourist or live in London. I fall into the latter category- and have found there are so many places I do not even realise exist to see! This book helps draw your attention to some of the best..The book is easy to use- divided into sections with a map with each part of London showing the locations and nearest tube. Great glossy photos and a page on each location. I am so impressed with it I am going to buy their second volume too. (And excellent price and speed of service from Amazon so I am VERY happy)." - Jane H (Amazon)

I lived in London for 20 years and could never understand why people crowded to the usual tourist haunts when there are so many other interesting places to see. Maybe they needed this book! It's an incredibly useful guidebook, gathering together some of the capital's lesser known sights in an easy-to-read format. It features some of my favourite places, such as Little Venice and the fascinating Horniman Museum, but also many I didn't know existed. I never knew there was a genuine Turkish bathhouse within the City or a farm in Docklands, and am adding the Museum of Brands to my must-see list for my next visit to the capital. This book rings with authenticity - the author knows London well and each entry is packed with interesting facts and asides - and would make a great present not just for someone visiting the capital but also to encourage a Londoner to discover the secrets in their own backyard. - avidreader (Amazon)

London's Hidden Secrets isn't intended for the "It's Tuesday, so it must be London" type tourist, but for those of us looking for the quirky, surprising, and wonderful this book is a gem. I thought I knew our capital city pretty well, but looking through the index there are dozens of trips to palaces, caves, gardens and interesting places that I've never even heard of and can't wait to see.
The layout and text is crisp and easy to read even while travelling, the At a Glance panel is helpful, and the book is small enough to pop into a pocket. I liked the great photos and the easy reference maps - in fact I liked everything.

Really great read I hope to visit many of the places I had never heard of Good idea , take your kindle with you if you are out and about in London just to go exploring, some of the places are quite close together, you may be able to visit 2or 3 in one day. As well as tube and train, how to get there by bus would have been good. - Pamela Wilson (Amazon)

I'd been to London a couple of times before but this book had wonderful tips on where to go that weren't in the usual guidebook. My favorite---the Royal Air Force Museum. - Antsy (Amazon.com)
