The UK Adventure Sports Handbook

Description

“What did you do at the weekend?” Do you hate that question? If the truth is something like: got up late, re-organised sock drawer, wandered aimlessly down town, watched The X Factor, opened a (second?) bottle of beer/wine and passed out on the sofa – then maybe you need to get out more and live a little closer to the edge.

There’s a whole new world of adventures on your doorstep, from paragliding to field archery, bouldering to mountain biking. Tomorrow you could be snorkeling, foraging, wild camping or riding a horse along a sandy beach. We’ve rounded up 100 plus activities to suit every fitness level, budget and age, encompassing every corner of Britain. Not just for weekends, these activities will help ou fill any gap in your schedule, from an afternoon to the rest of your life.

Many won’t cost much, if anything, to try, and most have the option of equipment hire and gentle instruction (if necessary). We’ve listed a few specific locations so that you can easily find the closest to you, and added an ‘Accessibility Index’ that grades each activity on how easy it is to arrange. There are easier options for most of them, so you can start gently – maybe even take the kids – and work your way up to weekend marathons and death-defying feats.

There’s really no excuse for being bored these days. The UK Adventure Sports Handbook provides you with the inspiration for countless unique experiences, a sack full of dirty clothing on Monday morning and an exciting tale to tell the folks at work. “What did you do at the weekend? Well I was sailing at 3,000ft over this mountain…”

Reviews

What I especially liked about this book, and why I think it's worth giving it a review when I wouldn't normally for a guide book, is that it goes far beyond most of these "1001 Things to Do Before you Die" type books. Sometimes they can be basically picture books only of use for a coffee table or downstairs loo, whereas this one is not only really funny, but useful too. I liked the way the writer captures the essence of a normal boring weekend watching crap TV and getting drunk, and lightly suggests why there are so much better alternatives for you and your family. It's all quite inspiring. I also like the way that whereas so many of these books are aimed at so-called "adrenalin junkies" (or "wallies" as I like to think of them), this is divided up so you can find something to do for any member of the family. Having said all this, I haven't actually managed to do anything more interesting with my leisure time since buying the book - but at least I know what I could be doing. Maybe when the weather gets cooler and sitting in the garden gets less appealing...? - CarolB, Amazon

At last the book I have been waiting for! When I get that priceless spare weekend I want to try all sorts of activities that I have never tried before. I have been continually frustrated when trying to glean information off the web about what range of opportunities are available. Now I have this book which is really well illustrated and a brilliant ready reference of what I can do, how difficult or easy a new activity might be and where I can follow up and book a place. Then I can use the web for following up the details and making a booking. It's a great find and actually, it's also a just a very entertaining read. - Sal, Amazon

Really good book full of ideas, some more usual and some more unusual
Everyone will find something in here. Great for new ideas and trying different things although some of the activities are covered more than others.

I normally find it very difficult to buy birthday presents for my 30 year old nephew but after seeing this book & buying it for him I feel rather smug,he likes to do sport & to make good use of his weekends & I think that I have hit the nail on the head with this book. It is absolutely jam packed with amazing ideas & gives you bags of information. Can hardly wait for his birthday now, I'm sure he will find it really inspiring. - Lady Haha, Amazon

I have been looking for this sort of information on mini holidays with a difference on the web for ages, but it was hopeless - the web is great if you know what you are looking for, but not so good if you are looking for something new! But this book not only gave me fresh ideas for things I haven't even heard of,like green laning and zorbing, but also told me how fit I needed to be and whether I needed to take any special clothes or equipment. - Dave, Amazon

I read this book and felt so guilty. My weekends are spent negotiating the aisles at Asda, uncorking the three-for- - avidreader, Amazon

I was given Weekends to Brag About by a friend (thanks Dan) who thought I should get out more - so we tried a horse-riding weekend. It was awesome! Have never been on a horse before so was a bit sore next day, but have already booked my next lesson and bought some riding boots, and we are planning to try scuba diving next. - antikdragon, Amazon
