What is the Test?

What is the Test?

It’s a short test designed to check whether, as a would-be UK resident or citizen, you can fit in with the British way of life. It does this by:

- testing your knowledge of the English language;

- testing your knowledge of British customs and institutions and other important aspects of living in the UK.

The test’s full title is the ‘Knowledge of Life in the UK’ test, but it’s generally referred to as the ‘Life in the UK’ test, which is what we call it in this book. It’s based on chapters two, three, four, five and six of the Home Office’s Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship handbook, and it’s these chapters that are covered here.

The ‘Life in the UK’ test has a number of different names, which can be confusing. When it was first introduced in 2005, people called it the ‘citizenship test’, because it was taken by residents who wanted to become citizens of the UK. As it was a test for people aiming to become British, some also referred to it as the ‘Britishness test’. However, everything changed in 2007, when the government decided that immigrants who wanted to become permanent residents first had to pass the ‘Life in the UK’ test.

Therefore, anyone applying for permanent residency or settlement status since 2nd April 2007 must take and pass the test. Even if you qualify for residency on all other counts, you cannot become a permanent resident of the UK until you have passed the test.

Both the Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship handbook and the test questions were revised in April 2007. This was done to make both more accessible and easier to understand for those whose mother tongue isn’t English. The contents of the above book and the chapters that candidates need to learn have also changed. Make sure that your copy of the above book is the revised edition (see the cover) and that it’s valid for tests taken after April 2007.

How this Book can Help

How this Book can Help

The Life in the UK: Test & Study Guide was devised as an easy-to-use revision guide to use alongside the Home Office’s Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship handbook. We recommend that you read both books together. The ‘Life in the UK’ test is based upon chapters two to six of the Home Office’s Life in the United Kingdom, and these same chapters are covered in this book, which reflects the key points of each chapter.

At the end of each chapter, there’s a series of 60 questions designed to test your understanding of what you’ve just read. Answer the questions and look up the answers in the back of the book. If you’ve got at least 45 questions right then move on to the next section; if not, your knowledge is borderline, therefore you should go back and revise those parts of the chapter which you don’t know well enough. Keep doing this until you’re able to answer at least 75 per cent (45) of the questions in the book correctly. Once you can do this for all five chapters, you’re ready to take the ‘Life in the UK’ test.

Good luck! You’re about to become a permanent resident or citizen of Britain, a move that will change your life!
